Narrative Reading Unit:
In this unit, students will engage in the art of reading historical fiction while becoming thoughtful in their analysis of the texts they read. Students will learn to discern fact from fiction in historical fiction and use their curiosity to foster learning connections. Students will engage in thoughtful discussion of texts and their meaning, comparing what they read to what they see. Through interaction with the text, self-monitoring, and community discussion, students will establish ways of reading that will give them agency. The unit is intended to hone skills in developing theories about meaning while tracking textual evidence. The use of writers’ notebooks will aid in students’ making connections, as well as comparing and contrasting. Students will participate in a reading community that involves them in an authentic reading experience, which focuses on specific reading strategies. (Adapted from the 8th Grade ELA MAISA Units)
